We all know that Malaysia is blessed with a variety breed of dogs. But have you ever thought about which of them are the most popular? As we wondered ourselves, we thought that it would be interesting to look into it – from small to large dogs.

But this wasn’t an easy task! That’s why we decided to conduct a survey featuring over 350 dog parents, and thanks to them, we’re now able to provide you with a list of the most popular dog breeds in Malaysia.

Be mindful that the data is purely based on our research including a survey. Enough explaining, let’s get to the fun stuff!

Our list of the most popular dog breeds in Malaysia

1. Mixed Breed

*Drumrolls* …. and the top spot goes to mixed breeds!

Mixed breeds, aka mongrels or mutts, comes in all sizes and are common companions in Malaysian households. Most of them have a unique appearance, and sometimes, it can be difficult to predict what their personality will be like.

In contrast, purebred dogs are designed to have specific traits, e.g. to help them perform tasks such as herding, hunting, and more. Whereas in mixed breeds, temperaments and behaviours are often shaped randomly which can make them more flexible and adaptable to a greater variety of households and lifestyles.

On top of that, most mixed-breed dogs are known to have a tendency to be healthier thanks to their good genetic diversity.

Here are some of the mixed breeds with cutesy names listed in the survey:

• Maltipoo
• Cockapoo
• Labradoodle
• Schnoodle

To be more precise, the afore-mentioned breeds are classified as cross-bred but they can also be considered as mixed breeds.

2. Toy Poodle/Poodle

We bet you saw this coming!

Toy poodles/poodles are indeed the love of many pet parents in Malaysia. Try to visit the central park at DPC and there will be one without a doubt.

Originating from France, the toy poodles/poodles are best known for their rounded head and curly, thick coat. Not only do they come in various colours, but they also shed very little. That makes them fairly easy to maintain.

Due to their high intelligence, toy poodles/poodles can be easy to train. Another bonus is that they’re often friendly and outgoing making them the perfect family pet.

3. Shih Tzu

The origins of this “little lion” date back to ancient times in China, and it’s one of the 14 oldest dog breeds. Back in the days, The Shih Tzus were bred solely to be companions and were often on the laps of royal Chinese families during the Ming Dynasty.

That aside, this breed is famed for its gorgeous silky, long coat which comes in many colours. Personality-wise, they’re affectionate, sweet-tempered, and outgoing.

Although mainly a lap dog, they’re not a total couch potato and may bark at newcomers or strangers. This is due to their alert and lively nature, however, they probably only do so because they want to make friends.

The Shih Tzu breed is very adaptable as they can be comfortable living in everything from small city apartments to large suburban homes. Additionally, short walks are sufficient for this dog since they’re not extremely active.

The Yorkshire and Silky Terrier are often confused with each other due to their similar glamourous appearances but there’s a difference: The first being bred in England while the latter in Australia.

Both have beautiful silky coats that are gold and blue which they are adored dearly for. Yorkies typically have a bow in a topknot, while the Silky is topped by profuse hair parted down the middle.

7. Husky

8. Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is without a doubt one of the most popular breeds in Malaysia.

Originally, The Golden Retriever was bred to assist in hunting. That’s why they can be very energetic beings and enjoy playing outdoors, especially fetching. You may be surprised that they can be pretty good swimmers as well!

Despite their maybe intimidating look, they’re very loving and faithful companions. But when threatened, they can be strong and protective. All these traits make them excellent guard dogs, especially due to their aloof and suspicious nature.

A German Shepherds requires a lot of exercise. If not, the boredom can lead them to unwanted behaviours like chewing or barking.

Now, let’s have look at the last breed on our list, the Labrador:

10. Labrador

The Labrador is one of the friendliest and most intelligent dogs in the world, bred to be loving companions and useful working dogs. A fun fact is that Labs used to help fishermen to haul nets, fetching ropes, and retrieve fishes that escaped the nets.

Thanks to their good-natured, people-oriented, and hardworking personality, they have earned a place in the hearts of many Malaysians. Just like the Golden Retriever, A Labrador makes a great rescue, assistance, and therapy dog.

The only thing they’re hopeless at is being watchdogs. Compared to any other dogs, the Labs are likely to greet an intruder and welcome them to their home.

Another thing to be mindful of is that labs like to eat a lot — like seriously, A LOT. Especially since they’re originally bred to be working dogs hence they have a high energy level. Because of this, it’s important that they have plenty of exercises.
